4 Fun Shutter Styles for Windows

If you have windows, you should probably have windows shutter. It’s very useful, it can be used against curious looks, against dazzling sunlight, you can adjust the content of daylight. Besides all that, you can harmonize it with the house or windows style. If you are full of beans, you can use your shutters for fun and enjoy every time you take a look at it.

So, there are many ways to entertain yourself, your family, neighbors, and passers by with these 4 shutter styles.

First, this one is very simple but very creative and fun. You can use it on every window in your house, but it will best fit in children’s room. It’s shutter with different colors. It looks like a rainbow. You can mix all kind of colors and when you use your shutter it will be magic. Your kid’s room will look like the land of fairy tales. Best thing is that you can also use regular, white shutters and paint it with your kids. Allows you great fun even while you do it.

The second one is also very creative. You can use all kind of shutters but this one will improve your mood for sure. When you use this shutter, you can protect yourself from sun and brightness but also you practically get painting. You wonder how to do that? Well, it’s not so complicated. You can print your family photo, or photo of your children, dog and enjoy in your room. Like the previous idea, you can do it by yourself, but, it is better to leave it to the professionals.

The third shutter depends on the window shape. If you have unusual window shape, you must use the same kind of shutter. For example, your window can look like a small house, top window is the triangular shape (roof) and the bottom is a rectangle. So, you just need that kind of shutters, maybe it will be more difficult to fit in and find appropriate measures but it is worth it.

Fourth shutter style is for Western fans.  I think that everyone loves kind of doors in Western movies. Do you remember this type of door? Every bar had such a door. So, of course, you will not use it that way, because we are talking about window shutters. One shutter will be divided into two parts and each part will have the grip. With that grip, you will open and close shutters. You will feel for a moment like you are in the middle of a movie, going to the bar to catch a villain.

So,  it is up to you what kind of shutter you will use. The basic purpose is to protect you from sunlight, to provide you some privacy. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t add a dose of fun to everything you do. Pick according to your taste. Happiness is hiding in small things. That small thing, for example, is the shutter. Let that window and that shutter be an opening to your room of joy and fun.

Big Windows vs Small Windows: Pros and Cons

“Never hesitate to open a new window in your life”. That is really true. In this quote, it’s not about that kind of window, but it’s true in both cases. You really should open a new window in your life, but if you are not ready for an opening window in your life, you could do that in your house. If you are wondering what kind of window, should it be small or big one, this article can help you. You are going to find out their advantages and disadvantages.

Big Windows

If you like to have big windows in your house, I will help you to confirm your opinion. First of all, big windows can provide a beautiful view of the outdoors. Of course, it depends what kind of outdoors, but big ones will for sure help to look nicer. Imagine just having a big window on the roof of your house, directly to your sleeping place. When the sky is clear, you can see billions of stars from your bed. Isn’t that great?

Then, you will provide the home with natural light. That is very important. In sunny days your room, your house will be shine like stars you look from your bed. Because of that daylight, you will be happier, you will feel more comfortable.

Small Windows

De gustibus non est disputandum. You probably heard this quote. It means that tastes are different. So, there are a lot of people who like small windows. It can provide us a bit more privacy. If our house is small, probably it will look better if we have small windows. If you have room for rest, with small ones you could sleep as much as you like, sunlight will not wake you up.

When we are talking about their disadvantages, we can use their positive sides and compare them. The positive side of the big window is the negative side of a small window.

Small windows can’t provide you a good ventilation. If the day is beautiful, you will naturally want to go out, on the fresh air. That fresh air you won’t get from small one. Also, when it’s a sunny day, you can’t use solar heating. If you can’t do that, you will have more spendings for water heating for example.

Big windows are very expensive. It will cost you a lot more than a small window. Then, if you are not a fan of cleaning, I have a bad news for you. You will have a big job to clean it. Not just that, the surface is big so that means it will be dirty more often.

These few reasons are for and against small and big windows. You should consider each of them, according to your situation. It’s your house, so it only depends on you what kind of window it will be. There are many more pros and cons, but these are one of the most important things you should know, which can help in your final decision.

Whether you are building a new home or simply remodeling your existing home, windows affect a home great, in appearance as well as the home’s energy efficiency.  Therefore, when deciding on the type of window you want, you first have to decide on the purpose of the window.

Windows generally have two purposes.  They allow in natural light and they are used for ventilation.  The following are some basic guidelines you should consider when you want to increase the amount of light or ventilation entering a room.

As simple as this may sound, windows must open and operate from the inside, and they should egress to a street, yard, open walkway, alley, court, porch, or patio. The size of the window should equal at least 8% of the floor space in the room with the minimum space of the open window equaling at least 4% of the floor space.

  • Bathroom windows should be at least 3 sq. feet with at least half of the window being able to open.
  • Specialty glass such as glass block, frosted, leaded, and stain glass can be used to provide natural light as well as privacy to any room.
  • The best type of windows for ventilation are casement windows for they allow more circulation of air simply because the entire window can be opened.

Windows as Exits

Any room that is used for sleeping including livable basements must have at least one exit window for use as an emergency escape in case of an emergency.  This window should permit all occupants of the room to exit from the inside of the home, without the use of a key or any tool.

The following are some guidelines for Exit Windows:

  • All exit or egress windows must offer a clear opening that is at least 5.7 sq feet and have a minimum height of 2 feet and a minimum width of 20 inches.
  • The windowsills on all exit windows cannot exceed 44 inches above the ground.

All exit windows that are below ground level must have window wells.  In addition, if the window well is deeper than 44 inches, then a permanent ladder or steps need to be in place.  Steps and ladders must be fully usable when the window is fully opened.  Steps should be at least 12 inches wide and project away from the wall at least 3 feet.
